Business gurus have, as one would expect, cashed in on happiness norms but they have also helped launch a few of their own. The enduring appeal of "Emotional Intelligence," or EI, stands out as a shining example of the power of wishful thinking. The bandwagon unleashed 15 years ago is still running and EI has taken on a far broader meaning than originally conceived.
Only now is research starting to show that EI has a dark side. The frightening notion that EI and therapy culture in general makes people into better emotional manipulators should have been obvious from the start but is only now being appreciated.
